Instagram sizes
Instagram's help page keeps a feed photo between 1.91:1 and 3:4, and sizes width above 1080 down to 1080. At 1080 wide, the height runs from 566 to 1440. The tall edge is 1080×1440. A 3×3 is nine slices from split photo, not a collage preset. Photos are not uploaded.
Last checked 2026-10-26 against the Instagram Help page "Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram", https://help.instagram.com/1631821640426723. That page does not describe the profile thumbnail crop. Confirm the crop on your profile.
What the help page says
The page checked on 2026-10-26 says Instagram uploads a photo at up to 1080 pixels wide. A width from 320 to 1080 is kept at that resolution when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. The page spells the same range as a 1080-wide photo with a height between 566 and 1440. A lower width is enlarged to 320. A higher width is sized down to 1080. A ratio outside the range is cropped to a supported ratio.
This used to be summarized here as 4:5 through 1.91:1, with 4:5 called the tallest feed frame. 4:5 is 1080×1350, which is inside 566 to 1440, but it is not the edge the help page names. The tall edge is 3:4, 1080×1440. The wide edge is 1.91:1, 1080×566. Quote the page, not the old summary, if the two disagree.
Nothing on that page describes a profile grid thumbnail, a circle crop, or a 3×3 puzzle. Those notes below are about Collage87's files, plus the parts of a profile you can see yourself.
| Placement | Size the help page supports, or the file you actually need | In Collage87 |
|---|---|---|
| Square feed | 1080×1080. Ratio 1:1, inside the range. | The Square button is 1200×1200. It stays square and the help page says width above 1080 is sized down to 1080. Type 1080 and 1080 when you want that width exactly. |
| 4:5 feed | 1080×1350. Inside the range. Not the tall edge. | IG Portrait is this size. |
| 3:4 feed | 1080×1440. The tall edge named on the help page. | No preset. Type 1080 and 1440. |
| Wide feed | 1080×566. The 1.91:1 edge. | No preset. FB Post is 1200×630, about 1.90:1, and wider than 1080. Type 1080 and 566 for the exact frame. |
| Story frame | 1080×1920. Taller than 3:4, so the help page's feed rule crops a feed post of this file. | IG Story. Use it for a story, not as a feed tile. |
| Profile photo | The resolution page does not give a profile size. It does say widths under 320 are enlarged to 320. | Export a square PNG if you want the circle crop to start from a square. Confirm the circle on your profile. This table will not invent a pixel size the help page does not state. |
| 3×3, each tile | An even slice of the file you split. Not a collage preset, and not a size on the help page. | Split photo, default 3×3, Gap 0%, Margin 0%. A 1080×1080 source becomes nine 360×360 PNGs. A 3240×3240 source becomes nine 1080×1080 PNGs. Gap or margin above 0 makes the pieces smaller. |
Set the pixels
- On the collage, click the size button or type Width and Height. Export PNG writes those pixels at pixel ratio 1. The file name starts with collage-.
- Square, the button, is 1200×1200. Type over it when the help page's 1080 width is the point.
- IG Portrait already matches 1080×1350. Do not also type 1080×1440 and still call it the portrait preset. 1440 is 3:4, a typed size.
- On split photo, the source pixel size is the photo you upload, after rotate or flip. The tool does not resample to 1080. A 1080-wide square is something you bring, or a collage PNG you exported first and then split.
- Leave Gap and Margin at 0% for a puzzle. The posting order is on the Instagram 3×3 page. Newest post at the top-left means split_3_3.png goes up first.
Presets that are not Instagram sizes
FB Post, 1200×630, and FB Cover, 1920×721, are buttons on the collage. Facebook does not require them, and they are not on the Instagram resolution page. 1200×630 is close to the wide feed ratio and wider than 1080, so the help page's rule sizes that width down. If you need 1080×566, type it.
IG Story, 1080×1920, is a 9:16 frame. Height 1920 is past 1440, so it is outside the feed range on the page checked 2026-10-26. Export it when the destination is a story.
Questions
Is 1080×1350 still a valid feed size?
Yes, on the help page checked 2026-10-26. 1350 sits between 566 and 1440. It is 4:5. The tall edge that page names is 1440, which is 3:4.
Why is the Square button 1200 and not 1080?
Square is the collage preset, 1200×1200. The help page says width above 1080 is sized down to 1080. Type 1080 and 1080 if you want the export itself to be that width.
Where is the 3×3 tile size?
It is not a preset. Split photo cuts the file you give it. At gap 0 and margin 0, a 1080×1080 photo becomes nine 360×360 PNGs.
Does this page cover the profile thumbnail crop?
No. The resolution help page does not describe it. Check the crop on your profile after the first row of a puzzle.
